This note is a bond, not a banknote proper. In 1822 the Provisional Government of Greece issued bonds to raise a loan of 5 million piastres in order to pay its costs for the war of independence. However its wording specifically states that it is to be used in the purchase of national lands and that it is to be accepted in place of cash (meaning coins). It was therefore an attempt to establish a form of paper-based currency. |
