These were Canteen Marks which the General Administration of Macedonia stamped in Greek and German so they could be used as money because of the shortage of currency at that time. They circulated in Salonika from mid October 1944 until the withdrawal of the German troops from Thessaloniki on 30 October 1944 at a rate of 1Reichspfennig = 625 million drachma. In a number of cases, including this particular note, the drachma value in millions was penciled onto the back of the note. |
