Notes dated 1918 through 1922 but issued in 1922.
In 1922 a compulsory loan was raised by cutting in half all banknotes with a value of 5 drachmas or over. It then became necessary to replace the half notes which remained in circulation. In order to issue replacement notes as soon as possible it was decided that stocks of previously printed notes which had not been put into circulation should be used. Since these were all dated prior to 1922 they were stamped with NEON (NEW) to distinguish them from notes which had been in circulation prior to 1922 and which should therefore have been cut in half.
