| Comments | In 1927 the Greek government decided to establish a state-run central bank. This ended the issue of banknotes by private banks in Greece. The resultant Bank of Greece officially began operating on 14 May 1928. From 1928 to 1933 the new bank did not print its own banknotes. Apart from the time needed to design and print new notes, the National Bank of Greece still had stock of unissued notes and also had to be compensated for its note-issuing privilege being revoked. The Bank of Greece therefore put into circulation unissued notes still held by the National Bank of Greece. In most cases these were stamped in red with the words “TRAPEZA TIS ELLADOS” (BANK OF GREECE).
This note is also stamped - but in blue just above the serial number. Although it is dated 17 September 1926 it was not issued until later. |
