These are treasury or promissory notes which were issued to alleviate the shortage of cash after the Germans left Kalamata on 17 September 1944. ELAS (Communist) partisans entered the town and issued these notes through the Kalamata branch of the Bank of Greece. They were backed by a pledge of the Bank of Greece that they could be exchanged for banknotes. This note is part of the first (A) series. |
