Comments | When the Germans withdrew from Agrinio in 1944 Communist partisans moved in. The Bank of Greece then stopped consignments of cash to that area. To make up for the lack of cash the manager of the Agrinio branch of the Bank of Greece, George Fanos, filled in cheque books with amounts of 100, 200, 300, 500, 1,000 and 2,000 million drachmas and put them into circulation in lieu of banknotes. When the cheque books ran out he printed cheques with the relevant amounts. |
