In 1910 the Commonwealth Government assumed responsibility for issuing banknotes. Until new notes could be designed and printed, as a temporary measure the government purchased unused notes from the private banks and superscribed them with "AUSTRALIAN NOTE", with serial numbers and with the wording "Payable in Gold Coin at the Commonwealth Treasury at the seat of Government".
They were issued from 1910 to 1914. |
